Pickles!

“Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” Colossians 4:6 So yes, Pickles is a strange title for a blog, but I do however write about a soup kitchen…hahaha! The last several times

Serving Love

“It was your right hand, your arm and the light of your face that brought victory, for you loved them.” Psalms 44:3 I’ve shared the purpose of this blog is to try and give readers a glimpse of Cafe Central and what we do to

What to Write?

“All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” ~Psalm 139:16

Pen, compose, draft, record, note, scrawl, communicate….write. When Ann asked at the beginning of the year if someone would be willing to write a blog I thought, “sure, how hard can it be?” Each week after Cafe Central, reflect on the day and write something to inform, encourage or inspire. Easy right!?

There are some weeks that lend themselves to a story. At the beginning of the year, we wanted to tell our readers who we are, what we do, who we serve, and how they can be a part of our vision. We then went on to share different areas to serve; partner, participate and pray. February and March were leading up to our fundraising banquet to encourage our financial partners to help us meet our 50,000 goal to fund Cafe Central for the full year. (I’ll get back to that in the weeks to come) April brought the unexpected with COVID-19 and a change to take-out service. Admittedly though, most weeks seem pretty basic. We prepare, patrons arrive, we serve, clean up and head home. That’s it! So then what?

So…then I look for inspiration.

The bible! A culmination of writing, poetry and prose to inform, inspire and encourage it’s readers. The inspired word of God! As with any story, it has a beginning, something to hook the reader…”In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1) It also has an ending, something to sum it up…”The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen.” (Revelation 22:21). It’s the middle though, the information, the lessons, the stories….the characters!

On days that seem ordinary, routine, “normal”, I reflect on the characters. I see Mathis sitting on the front steps of the church resting after walking to Cafe Central. I see Napoleon parking his bicycle very purposefully on the side of the building. I see Horace without Lois because “she’s not feeling well today.” I see Carl asking for shorts as the hot weather approaches; and wonder how many “to-go” boxes Chris will ask for as he usually ate 3 or 4 plates of food when we sat inside. I hear Mary tell me how lonely she is and ask when we might be able to sit inside and visit again. I see volunteers beginning to return. I listen as Evette tells me about losing her son-in-law to a heart attack and to please pray for her daughter and grandson. I see Renee first in line as she got up early to be there so she could bring lunch back to the 15 children she is watching, then her car won’t start when it’s time to leave. I hear about Cindy’s plans to move to South Carolina. I hear the guys laugh as they work filling boxes from the truck. I see Miss Louis as she drives through the line just to say hello and that she doesn’t need food this week. I see new faces as people hear about Cafe Central and come to get food. I hear Dennis’s truck clunk as he drives away and Randrick say “thank you” after we take him home. I always wonder about people’s stories, and am blessed when God reminds me that in serving at Cafe Central, He has divinely placed us in the middle of His story.

It’s in this reflection that a day, “written in His book before one of them came to be”, becomes extraordinary!

Here’s Our Sign

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.” -‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3:23 So often we get caught up in what we do, it almost becomes who we are. Ministry isn’t any different. We want to help people,

Ask, Seek, Knock

April 30, 2020

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.  –Matthew 7:7

This verse came to mind this week as I began to think and pray about what to write. It teaches us that God answers prayer if we only ask and seek, and that the door will be opened because our Father gives good gifts to those who ask him. Here’s the thing that got me thinking though…how God answers prayer.

God uses US! Not just Café Central; everyone!

At the beginning of the year we talked about partnering with Café Central. We asked you for prayer, we sought help from volunteers, community and business partners and asked you to consider partnering with us financially so that we can keep our doors open. So what if no one answered?

I’ve been walking around the parking lot these last few weeks visiting with our patrons as they wait for sometimes 2-3 hours in their cars for a “to go” lunch and a box of food. They ask what we’re having. They ask if there will be a truck distributing food. They ask if we have bread to give away. They tell me what a blessing Café Central has been to them as some have lost their jobs during this time and may not know how they’ll eat for the next week. They tell me of new illness they are struggling with. They tell me of answered prayer. Of a new apartment and if I know who might help with furnishings, as they have none. They ask for masks and wonder when we can get back in the building to sit together eat and visit. They ask how my family and I are doing and they ask for hugs. So what if no one answered?

God answers all of those questions, all of our prayers. He knows the things we seek and which doors will open for us. Matthew 7:8 reads “For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.”

We usually think of this verse as God’s promise to us; to receive what we ask for, find what we’re seeking and having the door opened for us. What if we pause and take a different look. What if we changed our thinking to being the one God is using  to answer those who are asking, be the ones that are found by the people seeking and the ones ready and waiting to answer the door when others knock. God will use someone…will it be us?

Let Us Not Become Weary

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people.  – Galatians 6:10 April 16, 2020 Each week I begin writing by praying. I ask God to reveal to me what he wants me to share and then I try to write something

Suited Up!

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” –Ephesians 6:10-11

April 8, 2020

Each week brings a new challenge. As with most states across the country, Georgia is under a “State of Emergency” due to the COVID 19 pandemic. We are also currently under a “shelter-in-place” order with all the rules that go along with it. Fortunately Café Central has been designated an “essential service”. We have been able to continue serving “to-go” lunches, Volume Hyundai distributed toilet paper and paper towels and we also had a food truck from the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank deliver food for distribution to families on Tuesday.

Thank you! Dave Anderson – Volume Hyundai

In an effort to abide by the rules of the “shelter-in-place” order, we have had to make some changes with our processes and procedures. These changes include parking lot attendants in reflective vests, a 6-foot distance from cars, usually accomplished by a cart or a tub. Every volunteer is wearing a mask. We wear gloves, which we always had, but now change them much more frequently and we have disinfectant to spray down surfaces the lunch boxes might touch to ensure the safety of those we are serving.

The food truck adds it’s own new processes with trying to keep 6 feet between the volunteers filling the boxes, not placing boxes inside vehicles and how to complete the required forms without handing them out to each individual. Here again we came wearing masks and gloves, yielding a pen to fill out forms for everyone and ask the patrons to have trunk space available to place the boxes.

We have put on armor! We have taken the precautions that are suggested, and in some cases required, to accomplish the service we hope to provide. Ephesians 6:12 says, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” It feels so true. Serving has become difficult physically with fewer volunteers and all of the added “armor”. More so it has become spiritually harder as this pandemic lingers on and our focus begins to be this worldly armor instead of being the hands and feet of God.

As you wade your way through the unknowns of this time, I’d like to encourage you, and remind myself, to suit up with God’s armor. He didn’t make a suggestion or a requirement, he simply tells us to stand firm! We should “buckle the belt of truth around our waist, be sure the breastplate of righteousness is in place, make our feet ready with the gospel of peace, take up the shield of faith and be fitted with the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”. Most importantly pray…”on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. Be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people, SO THAT we will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel!” Ephesians 6:14-19

“Be strong! Take a stand! Put on the full armor of God!”

Buckets!
