Take Out

“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” – Matthew 25:40

March 26, 2020

Well, it’s been two weeks since my last BLOG and what a difference a couple weeks makes.  Our efforts have shifted from fundraising and having a banquet, which has been postponed for now, to how we can best supply lunch and food items to our patrons. The doors have closed, but our kitchen has not.

I was a librarian for 10 years so I like words. I like to know what they mean and how they apply. When I heard the word “pandemic” I wondered if it was called that because of the “panic” that quickly ensued or the “pandemonium” it seemed to be causing. I looked it up and it is an adjective, (of a disease) prevalent throughout an entire country, continent, or the whole world.

Here’s my crazy thought as I looked up the word and began to write…homelessness and hunger are “pandemics”! The difference for most of us is that we are not directly affected by this “disease”. We don’t venture into neighborhoods where we would see it, it isn’t a story on the news one might hear and it isn’t something you can “catch”, “contract” or “carry”.  Because of this “social distancing” it doesn’t seem like a pandemic at all, for those face to face with it every day, it is.

For the past two weeks Café Central has continued to provide lunch to our community. We have put every government precaution into place and are creating “to-go” lunch with a variation of a drive thru. The first week we served 345 boxes and this week we handed out 537. While most of our volunteers are in the “high risk” age, we encouraged them to stay home and stay well and are being blessed with the hands God provides. In addition, we have also been blessed with donations from our community…to-go boxes donated by Captain D’s, lunch meat for our subs donated by Jimmy Johns, bread from Kroger and fresh vegetables for our subs donated by Kai Thai. Thank you and Praise the Lord!

The realization as we continue to navigate through all of this is that we want to help each other, not just for our own well-being, but because “whatever we do for our brothers and sisters, we have done for God”.

Until we “read” again…God Bless!

Stephannie and her husband Doug have been volunteering at Cafe Central for 6 years. They moved from Colorado to Milledgeville Georgia in 2015. That year during Sunday service, the announcement that Cafe Central needed extra help for their Thanksgiving service, brought them for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. They have now served weekly since January 2016. Doug is the volunteer coordinator and member of the Cafe Central Board. Stephannie just likes to talk to, and about, the “family” Cafe Central has become.
